The New Normal

Nowadays everybody has a job, a side job or hobby, and a life as a commentator—adding their two cents on social media about current events.

This is in addition to caring for loved ones, dealing with health issues, and so on.

We need to start a conversation about all this.

Balance.

Privacy.

Etiquette.

Separating professional and personal when both sides of you are publicly visible.

We may have been doing this for years (or even decades) as individuals, but it’s going to take time for culture to catch up.

In particular we will need to learn (or re-learn) that people are entitled to their personal views.

It’s one thing to look at the business ethics of the stores you patronize, or to avoid dealing with people whose views on humanity are morally repugnant.

It’s another to be an ideological extremist, denigrating everyone who sees things differently than you.

Tolerance and inclusivity are important in a civil society.
